Baptism is an outward act of obedience to what God has already done in the heart of a believer. It is a public profession that someone has become a follower of Christ. Going under the water in full immersion symbolizes the dying to sin as Christ dies for our sins on the Cross. Rising from the water is a picture of our new life in Christ, just as Jesus rose from the grave.
